Even late in the afternoon when the shadow of Cowee Mountain stretches across the family tire shop, passersby can catch the bright notes of Appalachian, Americana, and Roots music drifting from the back room of the service station where Mountain Faith – the SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards nominated band from Sylva, North Carolina – rehearses between customers.
Everybody’s there: Sam McMahan on bass, Summer Brooke playing the fiddle and singing lead and harmony. Brayden McMahan is on the banjo and singing harmony, Jimmy Meyer is on rhythm guitar and singing harmony. Cory Piatt picking the mandolin and David Meyer triples on guitar, fiddle and piano plus vocals, while Chris Wright plays out a beat on the drums.
Since 2000, Mountain Faith has played their unique brand of music to audiences at colleges, civic centers, auditoriums, arenas, fair grounds, festivals, parks, and churches across the United States and Canada. Their fresh Appalachian take on gospel, bluegrass, folk, R&B, and pop music has earned them televised appearances on Daystar and the 2015 season of America’s Got Talent. Just before Thanksgiving 2015, the band traveled to the Persian Gulf and performed six concerts for our men and women serving in the military. Brayden commented ~ “Spending time with the troops and sharing our music with them was a life changing experience. We look forward to returning soon.”
Above all else, Mountain Faith is thankful for the opportunities God has provided them through music.
Mountain Faith’s 2015 America’s Got Talent Journey:
“On January 2, the band sat down to discuss our goals for the year,” Summer says. “We talked about auditioning for America’s Got Talent (AGT) but decided against it.” What the band didn’t know was that Summer’s mom overheard the conversation and quietly raced upstairs to submit a video to AGT.
Just two days later, Mountain Faith was playing a music festival near St. Louis, Missouri. And that’s when they got the call: AGT invited them to the auditions in St. Louis. “We still can’t believe how it worked out! The fact that we’re getting to play Radio City Music Hall – the same stage where Alison Krauss previously performed is so exciting and humbling.
Mountain Faith’s cover of One Republic’s “Counting Stars” earned four “yes” votes from the celebrity judges, which eventually lead them all the way to the semifinals. “At that point, our musical lives changed” states Sam. “We look forward to seeing what God has in store for us in 2016”.
