Tom Golden is a retired PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Partner and former Partner-In-Charge of the Midwest Region Investigations & Forensic Services practice and resides in the  Chicago area. Tom has a national reputation in forensic accounting and fraud investigations. He has been quoted in a number of major world-wide publications including Journal of Accountancy, USA Today, The Financial Times, Business Week, Chicago Tribune, and The Age (Melbourne, Australia), and featured on The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather shortly after Enron came to light.

Tom Golden has extensive testifying experience and is a frequent presenter having conducted numerous fraud investigation training seminars for both U. S. and foreign corporations, and the Federal Government including the FBI and IRS. Tom was the lead author of the award-winning John Wiley & Sons book A Guide to Forensic Accounting Investigation, now in its 2nd Edition. He is a CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner, former chairman of the Board of Regents for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and has been given this organization’s highest honor being name Regent Emeritus. Tom was also an adjunct professor at DePaul University, Chicago after he developed and taught the school’s first Forensic Accounting graduate course in 2002.

Tom’s presentation style is indeed unique and can be tailored to each specific audience. Whether he speaks from a podium or freely moves around an open stage he delivers simple techniques which auditors and financial executives can use to spot and avoid fraud. The uniqueness of his approach rests in his real-life experiences conducting large-scale investigations which bring to life these techniques to create an experience sure to enhance the learning experience, but in a humorous and memorable fashion. He literally “wrote the book on fraud” and you are guaranteed to walk away a more savvy business person having attended one of his sessions.

Tom can customize his presentations and speeches to your audience, but his more popular themes are presented below. Choose a topic below or mix and match… it’s up to you.

Keep in mind that Tom was a financial statement auditor for a number of years before discovering fraud on one of his public company clients leading him to start the Investigations and Forensic Services practice in Indianapolis for Coopers & Lybrand (later merged with Price Waterhouse to form PwC). This practice became so successful that the firm asked Tom to relocate to Chicago to head-up the Midwest Investigative and Forensic Services practice which grew to become the second largest such practice for PwC in the U.S.

Tom Golden’s Keynote Presentation Themes

Your Typical White-Collar Criminal… Not what you’d think

When I was leading the investigation into the highly publicized fraud at the American Cancer Society (ACS) our task was simply to determine many of the typical questions management asks with most fraud investigations…

First, Understand what Auditors Actually Do…

The stereotypical understanding of what an auditor does goes something like this. Auditors are like a government agency in that they go into a corporation, have free access to the books and records and have virtual police powers to make sure that all the numbers are right.

Do Universities Train Our Future Auditors to Find Fraud?

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is a resounding “No.”  While and increasing number of schools offer elective courses, undergraduate accounting curricula do not require any training in the art of fraud detection.  Why?

Trust but Verify

Message to all Auditors… you were not hired to be human lie-detectors relying entirely on what you are told by company personnel. Your job is to acquire and review audit evidence.

How does management prevent fraud?

Those engaged in the profession of auditing realize that the public expects auditors to do a much better job in detecting fraud even though our professional standards still do not hold us responsible for fraud detection.

The Art of the Interview

When John Wiley & Sons sought-out and contracted with Tom Golden to author A Guide to Forensic Accounting Investigation Tom knew that there was no one person alive who possessed the knowledge and skills.

Past Errors – Future Progress.  The Future of the Auditing Profession

I have been troubled for some time about our profession… the profession of auditing.  Since I graduated from college in 1972, 60% of the companies that comprised the list of the Fortune 500 are not only no longer on the list today.

So, tell Tom Golden what you want him to cover, choose a topic above, or mix and match… it’s up to you and your audience needs. Then, call us for free today at 888-655-4575 to check available dates for booking Tom Golden!
