Part of the fun of this job is the unexpected, there’s nothing ‘assembly-line’ about it. You have to be mentally “fast on your feet”, and sometimes your feet have to move fast too. 
This past December 8th I was shooting a local commercial in Portland when I got a call between takes asking if I was available just two nights away, on December 10th, to perform at a company Christmas party in Hubbell, Nebraska .
Take a moment and look up Hubbell, Nebraska on Google. It is remote and small. The 2000 census put the population at 73. This is the second joke I used on stage, and a couple more times since…
“The bigger the city, the farther away you start seeing road signs announcing you are getting closer. Hubbell doesn’t have any signs, just a guy standing in the middle of town with a piece of cardboard that reads, ‘Entering Hubbell’ and before you reach him he flips it over and it says, ‘You missed it.’
I flew out Saturday morning while rental car and hotel accommodations were still being set. After the gig, during the two and one-half hour drive back to civilization, I had to pull into an all-night Walmart to get a charger for my smart phone so I could read the email with my hotel information. I was in Nebraska for 14 hours: was in the car for five hours, was at the show for four hours, and slept for five. Yet, it was a solid success. It was very stressful, and a lot of work, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
