Milt’s style of stand-up comedy is clean, clever, and funny. With over twenty-five years of experience Milt’s humor has always been devoid of stereotypes, cheap shots, or laughter at anyone’s expense; in other words , never divisive or derisive. With material focusing on everyday experiences about his wife and kids, travels, and how we relate to the world around us; audiences always come away feeling good about how they chose to laugh.

Milt Abel also has the ability to make every show unique, enjoying the challenge of personalizing each show with jokes for that performance’s audience. An expressive performer; The Denver Rocky Mountain News said, “Half the show is watching his face as he tells his stories.”

A to Z Entertainment:  How long have you been performing as standup comedian and who are some of your comic influences?

Milt Abel:  I’ve been performing stand-up comedy for over thirty years now.  My influences have changed over the years, at first it was Woody Allen, then Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld.  As you move along in your career, influences play less and less a role because success in the art of stand-up, and it is an art, lies within discovering your own voice. Influences are directional signposts, but not destinations.

A to Z Entertainment:  When did you first realize you could make people laugh? Were you the “class clown” in school or how did your first adventure into comedy begin?

Milt Abel:  Almost everyone can get someone else to laugh at one time or another; casual conversation, the retelling of a funny anecdote, or they laugh at you unintentionally. The really tricky part is when they’re paying you, the spotlight comes on, and someone says ‘go.’  And to do it over and over again -for over 30 years.

A to Z:  Who are some comedians and comedy acts you admire and why?

Milt Abel:  My tastes have changed in comics I admire. Early on it was esoteric comics because I was still finding my footing, names of very good comics but not famous, people like Kevin Meany and Paula Poundstone. It’s always been clean, clever comics, and I think that shows in my performances; but lately I have been admiring the commercial success of comics; Jim Gaffigan comes to mind as someone who fills theaters, enjoys a lot of commercial success and still has a clean style of comedy.

A to Z Entertainment:  You’ve been very successful as a standup comedian. When did you realize that you could make a living as a Milt Abel - Unplugged Comedycomic? Can you tell us how your career began and how it developed? Besides making a living, how is it rewarding for you to be a funny comedian?

Milt Abel:  I got into stand-up comedy because a college recruiter had shown up on campus during career day with a booth that had a banner reading “Want to make fun of people and sleep till noon?” I’m kidding. I got into it because I had no choice. I love to make people laugh. I can’t stop myself. I do it at the grocery store, the coffee shop, anywhere where I have someone attention for a few seconds; I’ll think ‘what would be funny to do right now?’ And most often I’m right, and they laugh, sometimes they don’t and they think I have a problem and should be taken care of by someone with some psychological training.

A to Z:  What are your thoughts about the art of standup comedy today and what are the pros and cons of being a standup comedian?

Milt Abel:  It’s the best of times and it’s the worst of times. When I started back in the 1980’s comedy was a thriving creative scene that had open-ended opportunities to being on stage. That’s not so much the case anymore. My experience of the open-mike scene these days is that it seems far more cookie-cutter-like, so much of the same thing, the same narrow performances and performance venues. Why it’s the best of times is all the social and electronic media outlets. With YouTube, Twitter and Facebook the creative possibilities are limitless. If you’re funny there’s no reason imaginable to feel artistically frustrated.

A to Z Entertainment:  What advice would you give someone who wants to become a professional comedian?

Milt Abel:  There’s no substitute for stage time, get on stage and be courageous. And keep in mind, what do you want to be good at? Keeping drunks at a cheesy bar entertained, or filling a theater with people who left their house, drove their car to the theater, and paid for tickets, to see you?

Milt Abel LiveA to Z:  What’s on the horizon for you and your comedy career Milt?

Milt Abel:  I’m touring with a show “The stand-up Dads” that enjoys performing in theaters. It’s a great show that is consists of myself a couple other professional, clean comics who talk about fatherhood, raising kids, marriage. Bars and nightclubs are not so much my game anymore. I also enjoy doing more and more private gigs these days. I enjoy the challenge of writing a few custom jokes for that event’s client. The challenge of being the ‘outsider’ at a company event and still getting everyone on my side and making the night a lot more fun for everyone. There’s a lot of reward in that. A paycheck helps too.

A to Z Entertainment:  You’ve done many interviews, is there a question that you’re surprised you’re not asked more often?

Milt Abel:  Yes there is: “Don’t you owe me money?”
