Five for Fighting is the stage name of American singer-songwriter John Ondrasik. John is probably best known for his piano-based rock music, such as his Top 40 hits “Superman (It’s Not Easy)”, “100 Years“, and “The Riddle“.
John Ondrasik was born in Los Angeles, and is a child of a musical family. When he was younger, Ondrasik learned to play the piano, and in his teens he learned the guitar and began writing music. He also sang opera briefly, and John Ondrasik soon decided that he would like to be a singer and a songwriter. Graduating from UCLA with a degree in applied science and mathematics, John Ondrasik continued his musical pursuits in his spare time, while in college.
The name “Five for Fighting,” comes from an expression in ice hockey, when a player receives a five-minute penalty for fighting. John Ondrasik used to play ice hockey and is a big fan of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.
