Major Dan Rooney is a former F-16 Fighter pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, a patriotic philanthropist, and author of “A Patriot’s Calling: Living Life Between Fear and Faith.” Major Rooney is also a PGA professional golfer and the founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The Folds of Honor Foundation is a non-profit organization that has raised over 22 million dollars and has awarded over 5,000 educational scholarships to the family members of soldiers killed or disabled in combat.
Major Rooney was the graduation commencement speaker for a university in Arizona and spoke at two different graduation ceremonies. Including the family and guests of the graduates, Major Rooney spoke to about 2,000 people about leadership, teamwork and sacrifice.
For his work with the Folds of Honor Foundation, Major Rooney received the White House’s -Presidential Volunteer Service Award, the Air National Guard’s -Distinguished Service Medal, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and The PGA of America’s -Inaugural Patriot Award. In 2008, he was named as one of People Magazine’s -Heroes of the Year and one of ABC World News Tonight’s -Persons of the Year.
Major Rooney has a Master’s of Science degree in Performance Psychology from the University of Kansas.
He was a top graduate in his training as an F-16 fighter pilot. He is a two-time recipient of the coveted “Top Gun” award and was also honored with the “Spirit of Attack” award. Major Rooney served three combat tours in Iraq. For his service, Major Rooney has received many decorations to include: the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Anti-terrorism Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, and Air Expeditionary Medal.
