If you were listening to country radio in the late 90s, you could not have avoided hearing the music of CMA and Academy of Country Music awards finalist, Michael Peterson. A college football national champion, Michael burst onto the country music scene with three consecutive #1 hits (CMT, Billboard) in 1997 and 1998. His iconic songs: Drink, Swear, Steal and Lie (a love song, surprisingly having nothing to do with any of those vices) and From Here to Eternity helped him sell over 1 million albums for Warner Brothers, making him the top-selling new male artist and the top new airplay artist in country music for two consecutive years.

Now, 25 years later, Drink, Swear, Steal and Lie is recognized as one of the top 100 Essential Hits of the 90s, and From Here to Eternity is listed as the fourth most popular country music wedding song of all time. His songs have reached #1 fifteen times on music charts around the world, showcasing the international appeal of Michael Peterson’s music.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Washington State, Michael says the trauma he experienced as a boy set the stage for the emotional depth people often feel in his songs. Following his parents’ divorce, Michael was labeled a slow learner. As a teen Michael was sexually abused. At the age of 15, Michael’s father was shot to death by a business partner, and at age 17, his beloved stepfather committed suicide during a violent argument with Michaels mother. Clinging to a promise (Proverbs 3:5-6) that God delivered through a complete stranger in the weeks following his stepfather’s funeral, Michael headed for college, afraid to trust and constantly worrying about his future.

The next few years were filled with evidence of God keeping His promises. Heaven sent music began to help Michael express not only his loss and grief but also his hopes. Music literally brought healing into his life. Soon Michael began to feel a calling to create music and messaging that would help people the way music was helping him.

One day in his mid-twenties, while interning at a church, the pastor handed Michael a business card and asked him to write on the back summarizing any message Michael felt Jesus would have him share if he were invited to speak during an upcoming service. Here is the sentence Michael wrote on the back of that card: If I am invited to speak, I will share a relevant message of hope for those struggling to move on after trauma and loss. His pastor smiled and invited Michael to speak at the church for the first time.

Since that day, Michael has shared messages of hope in artful and entertaining ways in 22 countries to over a million people. He has shared hope in honky-tonks, county fairs, school assemblies, churches, fundraisers, youth conventions, large and small corporate events, as well as during USO and MWR military tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, and Germany, not to mention countless television, radio, and podcast interviews worldwide.

When asked about the impact he hopes his message will have on those who hear him sing and speak, he says: “I pray those who are listening will say to themselves ‘If Michael Peterson can make it, with God’s grace and help I can make it too.”
