In April of 1999, the Cherryholmes family put together a bluegrass band. After performing at many of the festivals in the Southwest, they decided the time had come to take their show on the road. In the summer of 2002, they took all of their possessions up to their home in the hills of northeastern Arizona, moved into their 1960 4104 GM bus, and set out on an adventure–playing bluegrass throughout the United States.
From the west coast to the east, the group now calling themselves Cherryholmes rouses their audiences, bringing them to their feet at nearly every performance. Many bands refer to them as “the group no one wants to follow.” More than just a family band, they have become veteran musicians playing traditional bluegrass with a fresh and exciting new energy.
Cherryholmes is Jere (Pop) on doghouse bass, Sandy Lee (Mom) on mandolin, mandola, and clawhammer banjo, Cia Leigh on banjo and guitar, B.J. on fiddle and mandolin, Skip on guitar and mandolin, and Molly Kate on fiddle. All share in the lead and harmony vocals. Their family trademark is excellent musicianship, nostalgic arrangements, tight harmonies, and energetic choreography around one microphone. Pop (the Boss Man) with his witty emcee work, along with Irish Step/Buck dancing performed by the rest make them a favorite at every bluegrass event.
After their first national tour in the fall of 2002, fans and musicians began to take notice. In November of 2002, Rhonda Vincent invited fiddler Molly Kate (who was then ten years old) to perform a fiddle tune she wrote (“Frankie Belle”) on her new CD “One Step Ahead.” By spring of 2003, Cherryholmes had played in Branson and Dollywood, and made their first appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, Ernest Tubb’s Midnight Jamboree, and Nashville’s Country Fan Fare. They have performed at IBMA’s Fan Fest the past two years and have received many nominations and accolades within the bluegrass music industry. Frank’s Fiddles, Gibson mandolins, Huber banjos, and Black Diamond Strings have supplied the family with instruments and string as well.
In addition to a full tour schedule in 2005, they will be a part of many other musical projects. A gospel tribute to Jimmy Martin will feature Cia singing with Doyle Lawson, Paul Williams, and J.D. Crowe. BJ and Molly will be featured in Rhonda Vincent’s upcoming DVD, scheduled for release in February, 2005. Another Cherryholmes CD is in the planning stages. This one will be recorded on the Skaggs Family label.
Cherryholmes has completed three CDs. The most recent, “Bluegrass Vagabonds” was produced by Rhonda’s brother Darren Vincent (Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder), Ronnie Light, and Cherryholmes. “Dressed For Success” was recorded in 2002 and “Still A Little Rough Around the Edges” in 2001. Their CDs are available at Cherryholmes performances, County Sales in Floyd, VA; Lonesome Town Records in Owensboro, KY; Circle K Music in Ball Ground, GA; and Tricopolis Records, CA.
They have performed on many radio and television shows throughout the country and will be performing at many major bluegrass festivals throughout the United States in 2005, including their own host festivals at the Hoofer’s Gospel Barn in La Grange, GA and Colorado River Bluegrass Festival in Bullhead City, AZ
