Born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, Matthew West, singer and songwriter, began to realize his love for music at an early age. The son of a minister, Matthew spent much of his time around the church exercising his musical gifts. It wasn’t until 1996 that Matthew began discovering his love for the craft of songwriting. “I convinced my dad to buy me a guitar, and I wrote my first song that day.” That’s when things started taking off.
A few months later, Matthew West left home to study music at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. There, he received extensive training in the areas of music theory, music business, and classical vocal performance. He says, “Coming into college I knew I needed to develop musically, and this was the perfect opportunity to reach my goals.”
Matthew’s growing desire for writing songs encouraged him to pursue solo performances of his original material. So, aside from his studies, he began traveling and playing regularly at various venues around the mid-west. His performances have ranged from colleges and universities, to coffee shops, to churches and youth groups. Matthew admits, “Spending four years on a college campus has created in me a passion to write and perform music that will speak to the variety of people represented in my audiences. I want to sing songs that are real and that have the ability to reach people with a positive message.”
More recently, Matthew West graduated from the university in May 1999. By July, he moved to Nashville, TN., to continue furthering his career in music. He signed an exclusive songwriting contract with Word/Idea Music Publishing that same month. Word has provided him with the chance to collaborate with other professional songwriters and musicians.
In addition to his work in Nashville, Matthew began making plans of taking his show on the road. Beginning in the Fall of 1999, his concerts included college campuses around the country.
Listening to Matthew West brings to mind the sounds of Steven Curtis Chapman, Marc Cohn, and Edwin McCain, all rolled into one. His rich, gutsy vocals compliment his contemporary music style. His concerts include both original music, as well as songs by other well known artists.
Matthew loves engaging his audiences through his music, which is easily recognized by those who come to see him play. He feels at home on stage, and he puts all of himself into each show. In his young career as a singer/songwriter, Matthew West is always striving to create new ways to reach people with a positive message and great music.
