Book or Hire Blues and Folk Singer EG KIGHT

Early in her career, she was dubbed “The Georgia Songbird,” and with good reason. And in recent years, EG Kight has emerged as a preeminent voice in roots music, receiving various music industry nominations, including six for Female Artist of the Year, three for Song of the Year, and one for Album of the Year.

In the mid 90’s, shortly after hearing a Koko Taylor album, critically acclaimed singer and songwriter EG Kight transitioned from performing as a country singer to touring as a full-fledged blues/roots artist. And with her rich vocals, well-crafted songs, and inimitable sense of humor, she has since entertained on stages around the world.

Kight lives on land in Dublin, Georgia that’s been in her family for four generations, and her roots go deep. Her granddaddy was a preacher, her mother sang in a gospel quartet, her grandmother taught her how to play guitar, and her uncle’s band played rock ‘n’ roll and country. Kight took bits and pieces of all of those influences, and through the years has developed a sound that transcends musical boundaries, with a unique blend of country, blues, Americana, southern rock, jazz, gospel, and funk. Her music appeals to most audiences, no matter their taste, and she has brought her diverse musical menu to various clubs, theaters, festivals, corporate events, and fundraisers.

With a rich and velvety voice that’s a cross between Phoebe Snow, Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna, and Patsy Cline, Kight performs as a solo, an acoustic trio, and with a band, and has worked shows with artists across the genres, including Gregg Allman, Phoebe Snow, Merle Haggard, Koko Taylor, Little Feat, Lee Roy Parnell, B.B. King, and Delbert McClinton.

A notable songwriter, many artists have recorded Kight’s songs, including Koko Taylor and Dorothy Moore. Several of her songs ended up on Grammy-nominated albums, and on the Children’s Miracle Network, Nick at Nite, ABC Family, the El Ray Network, and in November 2017 on NBC’s “Chicago PD.” And she’s placed five songs in a movie.

Her latest album, “A New Day,” debuted at #9 on the Living Blues Chart, and infuses her country-flavored southern-fried blues with a little gospel to create her most inspiring venture to date. According to Living Blues Magazine, it is “a testimony to the healing power of music.”

And it’s that healing power that brought her back from two life-threatening situations.

In May of 2011, Kight was rushed to the ER with stroke-like symptoms, and her family feared the worst. Then the diagnosis of meningitis and encephalitis left them bewildered. While there’s not a lot of information out there about encephalitis, they learned that people with only one of these illnesses face severe challenges, a large percentage of encephalitis patients die, and most people with both rarely survive. Lying in the hospital bed, Kight felt herself slipping away…

But she was determined to live, and to not only walk and talk again, but to sing and play guitar again. She fought her way back to the stage. And though she still deals with residuals from the acquired brain injury, a renowned neurologist told her that he believes she’s doing better than most of the thousands of patients he’s seen, because she has a deep passion for something – and that’s her music.

The first song she was able to write after this near-death journey was “Holdin’ On.” Some of the lyrics are “I’m holding on with everything I got / I’m going strong since I got another shot / When the sun came up and warmed my face / It felt so good to have another day.”

And in February of 2018, while walking down the country road near her house, as she had done for decades, Kight was viciously attacked by three dogs. They knocked her to the ground, and as she sat there, helpless, eye-to-eye with the dogs, she knew that this could be her last moments on this earth. But a voice told her to “be still,” and after what seemed an eternity, her neighbors drove by. When they realized what they’d just seen, they backed up and distracted the dogs long enough to get her into the car. In shock, she was taken to the hospital. After the medical staff cleaned and bandaged 14 wounds, covering both legs and her right arm, she was sent home. The last open wound finally closed four months later, and though on the surface the injuries seem to be healed, the internal damage will continue healing for a long time.

Once her arm healed enough to play guitar again, this ordeal inspired Kight to write yet another new song, “Scars.” It’s a captivating, heartfelt song that’s been moving audiences to tears. Fans have approached EG after her shows, sharing their own heartbreak stories, and praising Kight for writing such a touching song.

Connecting with the fans is what keeps EG Kight out on the road, touring. And the critics seem to agree that her songs, her vocals, and her guitar playing are simply extraordinary.
