Having performed for Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers and every U.S. President beginning with Jimmy Carter, Gary Morris is an exceptional talent who has amassed varied fans from around the world. Whether it is in Russia or Raleigh, his vocal mastery holds hushed audiences everywhere.
Gary Morris is a prolific songwriter, but is best known for his recording of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which went to number one and won song of the year from both the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM). The song was later recorded by Bette Midler, who took the song to the top of the Pop music charts.
Gary Morris has had five number one songs and 16 Top 10 singles on the Country Music charts. Besides his signature song, his many hits include; “Why Lady Why,” “Second Hand Heart,” “The Love She Found In Me,” “100% Chance of Rain,” “I’ll Never Stop Loving You,” and many other country classics.
In 1982, Billboard Magazine named the tall vocalist “Male Artist of the Year.” As his career began to soar in the mid-80s, Joseph Papp, one of the most influential producers in the history of the American theater, handpicked the Texas tenor and offered him the role of Rodolfo, starring with fellow country and rock artist Linda Ronstadt, in the opera La Boheme. After some prodding, Gary accepted the offer.
Gary Morris immediately returned to recording and touring, garnering more number-one hits in Country Music, but Broadway began wooing him once again. Notable theater producer, Sir Cameron Macintosh respected Gary’s extraordinary vocal range and was in dire need of a performer who could not only successfully execute the lead role in his production of Les Miserables, but one who could learn all the lines and challenging songs in only 3 weeks time. In keeping with the role of the heroic character, Gary Morris returned to Broadway as the first American actor and singer to perform the lead role of Jean Valjean in the world-renowned Les Miserables at the height of its popularity. Gary received resounding critical praise, including a Drama Desk Best Actor nomination and a Command Performance for Queen Elizabeth. Morris’ famous rendition of “Bring Him Home” can be found on the Official platinum-selling Grammy Award-winning International cast album.
Gary Morris is equally comfortable on stage and in front of the camera as he is in nature, far away from it all. Besides his recurring acting roles in General Hospital, The Colbys, Designing Women and Mike Hammer to name a few, he has been called upon to sing the title movie soundtracks “Blind Date,” starring Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger as well as the title cut for NBC’s daytime soap opera “Another World.” Many of his songs have been placed in TV series such as the legendary television drama “Dallas.
Gary’s contribution to the music world does not start and stop with himself. Gary Morris Music Publishing has helped launch, encourage and support some of today’s great songwriters and singers including Victoria Shaw and Faith Hill.
The multi-talented artist has also hosted multiple network shows including his own weekly TNN program, “The North American Sportsman,” which ran for five years. The show highlighted his love for the great outdoors and featured such celebrity guests as Bryant Gumble, Troy Aikman, and Larry Conk. Morris is an elite, skilled bow-hunter who has traveled North America hunting and taking every big game animal across the continent.
Combining his love and skill of fly fishing with his respect and compassion for veterans, Gary Morris has partnered with Project Healing Waters. In 2005, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) began serving wounded military service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, who were returning from combat. PHWFF uses the therapeutic properties of the serene sport of fly-fishing to treat PTSD and other combat related conditions. Since then, PHWFF has expanded nationwide, establishing its highly successful program in Department of Defense hospitals, Warrior Transition Units, and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and clinics.
The Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying, and rod building classes, along with clinics participants ranging from beginners who have never fished before, to those with prior fly fishing and tying experience who are adapting their skills to their new abilities. Morris is a supporter of PHWFF and is very active in its various programs throughout the year.
Whether it is melting hearts with his voice and music, seizing the viewers’ attention with his relaxed and realistic acting, or stunning woodsmen with his outstanding hunting skills, GARY MORRIS is one of the few men who can and does, do it all.
