Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook are the vocally gifted foursome who make up this one-of-a-kind country group, Little Big Town. Together since 1998, the group made their first public performance at the legendary Grand Ole Opry and then immediately signed that day to Mercury Nashville.
Months later, they exited the deal at Mercury due to creative differences and were signed to Sony Music Nashville. The group quickly began work on their debut album, writing and co-producing, which is an unusual accomplishment for a debut artist in Nashville. This long creative process birthed the self titled debut, Little Big Town. After an exciting 2002 where they saw their debut single, album and videos break onto the scene, they again found themselves exiting another frustrating label situation. With the continued ups and downs of the music business, one thing has always stayed the same for them, the focus and love they have for the music they make.
“Making music is what we were meant to do. We don’t do it for the approval of any corporate structure, only for the fans and to be moved ourselves,” says Karen. “We just want an opportunity to get our music out to people and to be as creative as we can possibly push ourselves to be.” The obstacles Little Big Town has encountered over the years have placed them in the middle of the most creative moments of their careers and has led them to a place that finally feels like home. Jimi adds, “The country format has always led the way for great singers and song writers and for beautiful harmonies. We are just attempting to reach for that high standard.”
When they are not in the studio, you may pass Little Big Town on the highway or catch them on a flight racking up frequent flyer miles. Undoubtedly this band’s passion is to perform live and connect with their fans. If you have not caught them in a live performance, then you have not truly experienced the power and emotion of all that they do.
It almost sounds as if Little Big Town is made of siblings who grew up together listening to exactly the same kinds of music. The band’s influences range from Alabama and The Eagles to Fleetwood Mac and Restless Heart. I guess the sibling harmonies come from years of friendship and making music together. In many ways that is what a band becomes on the road…family. What started several years ago as a living room hang out and a vision for a future in music has now become an inspiring story, one of perseverance and tenacity. As they enter into the next chapter of their careers, they are more positive and more motivated than ever before.
