Jerry Ryan
Jerry is known as the master of ceremonies, guitar and harmonica player. He is the director on stage delivering the timely punch-lines and enjoying every second in the spotlight. He is known to say; “I hate it when I have more fun than you do.” The former coach in Jerry comes out in bits and routines that reminisce about high school days.
Bobby Horton
An expert musician, Bobby “plays anything that ain’t tied down” quips Jerry. But it is probably his physical humor that has endeared himself to Three On A String audiences throughout the years.
Bobby has found a niche as a music historian. His series of “Homespun Songs of the Civil War” has been featured in many publications and won numerous awards. His work with Ken Burns, Florentine Films is extensive. “I have two passions.” says Horton, “music and history. I’ve been able to combine the two and do something I love to do.”
Brad Ryan
As a long time member of Three on a String, Brad has traveled the United States and Canada for over 28 years. His credits also include writing, producing, and recording many successful commercial songs including the nationally known “Rick and Bubba Theme Song.”
Brad has toured Scotland with Michael Adler Ministries as a featured “fiddler” on a 10-day musical mission and outreach for Christ.
Andy Meginniss
Veteran performer Andy Meginniss played bass, guitar and handled lead and harmony vocals as part of Three on a String from 1972 to 1985. He was invited to rejoin the group in 2013 and “is having more fun than ever.”
Andy has written several songs that the group has recorded and still perform, and two have been scored for the symphony. In 2011, he was elected to the Alabama Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
Three on a String has performed for: Longmont Symphony, Alabama Symphony, US Tobacco, Healthsouth, Mclane Trucking Co., League of Municipalities, Southern Company, ATT, Alabama Sports HOF, Daytona Int. Speedway, University of Alabama Athletic Dept., Southern Governors Conference, Ross Bridge Renaissance Hotel and many others.
In 2016, Three on a String celebrated 45 years in the entertainment business, a remarkable feat in today’s fast changing society.
Jerry and Bobby performed as a duet for one show at Horse Pens 40, near Steel, AL in 1971. George Pruitt, a big band music veteran suggested they add a bass player and thus, Three on a String was born. After some personnel changes and lots of one-night shows, the show eventually evolved into performances with symphony orchestras in several states including a nine city tour with the Alabama Symphony, opening for Bill Cosby, Red Skelton, Barbara Mandrel, Jeff Foxworthy, George Lindsey, Ray Stevens, and many more top stars. Add in concerts for art councils, chambers of commerce, landmark theatres and city celebrations and you can see these veteran entertainers have a very busy schedule.
Jerry Ryan left a career as a teacher, coach, and high school principal to pursue the performing dream, as a guitar player, vocalist, and harmonica player and he’s never looked back. “There is no feeling in the world like presenting our show to an audience that has no idea who we are and having the show close with a standing ovation,” says Jerry.
Bobby Horton started taking trumpet lessons as a child and eventually became proficient at more than 20 instruments including the banjo, dobro, mandolin, guitar, violin/fiddle, and the Irish pipes. He has worked with PBS producer Ken Burns on at least ten documentaries including “The Civil War”, “Lewis and Clark” and “Baseball” and is in constant demand for his musical presentation of Civil War music on the college lecture circuit. But he still finds time to tour with Three on a String.
Brad watched Jerry and Bobby learn their way around the music business before becoming the regular bass player, added fiddle to the shows musical presentation, and eventually developed one of the funniest comedy bits in a collection of winners.
Former member Andy Meginniss fits back in seamlessly after many years and adds his unique talents to the already stellar show!
Three on a String is four entertaining guys who have learned their craft and enjoy sharing their talents with each new audience. Jerry, Bobby, Brad, Andy say “Let’s have some fun!”
