Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams has made history for being one of the most successful and prolific artists to emerge during the last decade. As part of the beat-making duo The Neptunes with Chad Hugo and the alternative rock trio N.E.R.D. with Chad and childhood friend Shae Haley, Pharrell has helped A-List pop stars sell millions of albums and even earn Grammy Awards for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Nelly, and Usher.
Pharrell Williams didn’t only help change the face of pop music during the late ’90s and early 2000s. He also was one of the faces of pop music — as a charismatic star who often stole the show when producing or guesting on other artists’ hit singles. His presence was unfading, whether he was in front of a music video or behind a beat.
To trace the beginning of his ascent, you have to go back to 1992, when Teddy Riley tapped him to write a verse for Wreckx-n-Effect’s “Rump Shaker.” Since the late ’90s, Williams and longtime friend Chad Hugo — known together as the Neptunes — began scoring songwriting and production assignments that slowly but steadily infiltrated mainstream music, whether it was via dance-pop (Britney Spears’ “I’m a Slave 4 U”), hardcore rap (Clipse’s “Grindin'”), or contemporary R&B (Babyface’s “There She Goes”).
Pharrell Williams and Hugo were relatively obscure during the mid-’90s, doing spare work for the likes of SWV, Total, and Mase, but they would eventually develop a style that would become as recognized and as mimicked as that of fellow Virginia Beach native Timbaland. (Prior to stardom, all three producers were in a band together called Surrounded by Idiots.)
As the duo took on more work, Pharrell Williams’ voice became increasingly familiar. He was now more likely to provide the chorus and the background vocals of the same song, in addition to appearing in the video. (Hear Jay-Z’s “Excuse Me Miss” and Snoop Dogg’s “Beautiful” for two examples.) It wasn’t until the summer of 2003 that Pharrell truly stepped out on his own.
Pharrell released his first solo single, “Frontin’.” Produced with Hugo and featuring a guest verse from Jay-Z, the song built anticipation for The Neptunes Present… Clones, a compilation of all-new tracks from artists produced by the duo. “Frontin'” was a ubiquitous summer hit and kept Williams’ momentum running up to the release of Hugo and Williams’ second funk/rock-oriented N.E.R.D. album, released in March 2004. Williams’ first solo album, In My Mind, survived a number of delays and was finally issued in July 2006
Pharrell William’s unique style and creative aesthetic has also been a fore in several successful businesses outside the world of music. These include founding the popular clothing brands, Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, as well as designing limited edition jewelry and accessories for Louis Vuitton. In collaboration with French furniture makers Domeau & Peres, Pharrell designed a collection of chairs called “Perspective” which debuted at the prestigious Emmanuel Perrotin Galerie in Paris.
Pharrell featured on Daft Punk’s fourth studio album Random Access Memories on songs “Get Lucky” and “Lose Yourself to Dance”. In addition, Williams contributed to Azealia Banks’ debut studio album Broke with Expensive Taste, featuring on the song “ATM Jam.” Williams penned three new original songs, included alongside composer Heitor Pereira’s score, for the sequel Despicable Me 2. These were “Just a Cloud Away”, “Happy”, and “Scream” (featuring Cee Lo Green). His two original songs from the first film were also reprised on the soundtrack – “Despicable Me” and “Fun, Fun, Fun”. He also participated in the drummer sessions of the soundtrack of Man of Steel by Hans Zimmer.
In March 2013, Pharrell Williams appeared alongside T.I. on Robin Thicke’s hit single “Blurred Lines”. The song has been a worldwide hit, has peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and has also reached number one in 13 more countries including the United Kingdom and Germany, making it Pharrell’s third Billboard Hot 100 number one single. On June 29, 2013, Pharrell became the 12th artist in the chart’s history to simultaneously hold the number one and two positions with “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky”, respectively.
By July 2013 there had only been 137 singles in UK chart history to have sold 1 million copies in the UK; that month Pharrell scored two million-sellers with “Get Lucky” and “Blurred Lines”. In August 2013, Busta Rhymes talked about an unreleased “documentary album” by Pharrell where he talks about “inner-city strife and hardship”.In November 2013, Pharrell released the first 24-hour music video to his Despicable Me 2 collaboration song, “Happy”.
By December 2013, Pharrell Williams had been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year.In the same month, a press release from Columbia Records announced that Pharrell had signed a contract with the label and would be releasing an album in 2014, featuring the single “Happy” from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. For “Happy”, Pharrell was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In February 2014 Major Lazer announced they would be releasing a five-track EP titled Apocalypse Soon on the 25th of that month.
On February 18, Pharrell Williams announced via Twitter that his sophomore album, Girl would be released on March 3, 2014. At the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, 2014, Williams’ song “Happy” lost to “Let It Go” from Frozen. Afterwards, when GQ magazine asked Williams “how badly” did he want the Oscar, he responded: “When they read the results, my face was… frozen. But then I thought about it, and I just decided just to…let it go.” On March 31, 2014, Pharrell Williams was announced as a new coach for the seventh season of The Voice, replacing Cee Lo Green.
