Andy Locklair says people don’t really have to look too hard for things to laugh about. “There is comedy everywhere, in almost everything,” he says. “My job is just finding a way to point it out.”

Locklair’s hometown offered the comedian and musician a helping hand by providing plenty of funny fodder at which to point. Darlington, S.C. lies in the very heart of NASCAR racing country, and Andy’s 20-plus years in law enforcement offered up additional fuel for his performance fire. His relatable, truth-be-told brand of humor has made him a favorite on the Southeastern entertainment circuit, and now he is taking his show on the national road.

Andy Locklair’s career began at the ripe old age of 7, when he first picked up the guitar. “My brother played and I didn’t like him hogging all the attention,” he says. Andy got his first job in a “beer-joint band” at age 14, and at 21, he became a police officer, continuing to perform in bands part-time and picking up side jobs at local radio and TV stations. The graduate of Liberty University and the University of Phoenix admits, “I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but whatever it was, I knew I liked it.”

Aspirations for a career in politics were short-lived when Locklair ran for a seat on the Darlington County Council, and lost. “You find out how much people like you when you run for office,” he says. “I learned that people liked me a lot … they just liked the other guy better.”

Things began to look up when he hosted a morning radio talk show in nearby Hartsville, S.C. When the station was sold to a large corporate group, the show evolved into a full-fledged racing program, and a career was born; Race Talk ranked number one in its time slot for eight years.

Andy Locklair subsequently moved back to TV, this time as co-host of “Fox Racing News” on the local Florence/Myrtle Beach-area FOX affiliate. His trademark “What Smokes My Goat” rants are the most popular features on the station’s website and have garnered attention nationwide, with topics ranging from “Pickin’ a Pope” to zombies and ugly babies.

Somewhere along the line, Andy realized that he was innately, effortlessly funny. Comedic legends like Jerry Clower, Lewis Grizzard and Jeff Foxworthy had already paved the way for Southern humor, and Andy, who had always been known for his quick wit and uniquely clever phrase-turning, began to seriously hone his craft and put an act together.

Church halls and Christmas parties quickly gave way to larger venues and bigger crowds, and for Locklair, who feels that laughter may the best medicine, but it doesn’t sound too bad, either, the die was cast.

“I was raising my family, and wanted to get as good as I possibly could before I took the show to a national level. You really have to be on your game and make a full-time commitment if you want to succeed, and there were things I needed to take care of before I could do that.”

His patience paid off when, with no children living at home, Andy put together a Christmas variety show in December 2012 to test the water. “Hometown Christmas” was a full-scale extravaganza staged in a large theater venue, including solo and ensemble singing, dancing, a half hour of live comedy – the whole shebang.

While being professionally funny is a serious business for some, for Andy Locklair, it is simply a way of life. The enthusiastic response of sold-out crowds for the Christmas show gave him the push needed to take that last big step.

“The show was a big hit, but more importantly, it was a major turning point for me,” he says. “It convinced me of what I already knew.

“I’m ready; it’s time.”
