Once ranked the 28th most conservative Senate member by the National Journal, Senator Hutchison’s voting record has been fiercely consistent, earning her an award from The American Conservative Union for her “support of conservative principles on a wide range of issues of concern to grassroots conservatives.” Senator Hutchison’s leadership in the Senate included serving as Vice-Chairman of the Republican Conference and later as the Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.

Trailblazer: Forging the Path for Women in Leadership
In 1993, Senator Hutchison made history by becoming Texas’s first–and only—female senator. But prior to that, Hutchison had already amassed significant victories for women in politics: in the Texas House, she was the first Republican female to be elected; as state treasurer, she was the party’s first woman elected to state office. Senator Hutchison’s trailblazing legacy spans back the 60’s, when she was one of five women to graduate law school at the University of Texas and the 70’s when she became the first woman television news correspondent in Houston. Once listed among the world’s most powerful women by Forbes magazine, Hutchison has established herself as a female leader who inspires other women to break down barriers—once and for all.
Senator Hutchison was elected to a full six-year term in 1994. She earned a second term in 2000, when she was elected with more votes than any other statewide candidate in Texas history. In 2006, she was again re-elected by an overwhelming margin.
Senator Hutchison served in the Senate leadership, having first been elected Vice-Chairman of the Republican Conference and later elected Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.
Senator Hutchison was most recently the Ranking Member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, and Science. She has been Chairman of the Military Construction Appropriations Sub-Committee and served on the Defense Appropriations Sub-Committee.
Senator Hutchison grew up in La Marque, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas and UT Law School. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives. In 1990, she was elected Texas State Treasurer. In June 2000, she and several colleagues coauthored Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate, and in 2004, she released her first book, a best seller, American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country. Senator Hutchison published her second bestseller, Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers, in October 2007. Her latest book is Unflinching Courage.
